While the recent violent assault at Northern Illinois University took place on the DeKalb campus, this incident has affected the entire NIU community. This includes students and faculty attending or teaching classes at one of our many off-campus locations. Therefore, we are providing the following information in hopes that it will be beneficial as your continue your teaching and learning activities.
The University has collected resource information from various sources to assist you and your students. These materials can be accessed at: www.niu.edu/facdev/resources/crisis/ Included in this email are copies of tip/handout sheets which are being distributed to instructors on the main campus in DeKalb.
The NIU Counseling Services website has several tip sheets which may be of value: www.niu.edu/csdc/
Students in off-campus courses may have questions about access to counseling services beyond those available on the DeKalb campus. Mental health providers from around the state have been quick to offer assistance to NIU students and faculty. The university's Employee Assistance Program is expanding its list of links to services in the broader community, and the Counseling and Student Development Center is adding a "mental health locator" to the website. Many of our off-campus students are employed in organizations which offer employee wellness services of their own.
NIU has received a number of specific offers of help. The Family Institute at Northwestern University, which has four clinics in the Chicago area (downtown Chicago, La Grange, Evanston, and Northbrook), is providing services for NIU students and their families. To make an appointment, students should call 847-733-4300 and tell the intake person that he/she is calling for service in regard to NIU shootings.
The Janet Wattles Center, with two sites in Rockford and one in Belvidere, has added tips to its website (www.janetwattles.org) related to coping with the NIU tragedy and urges anyone needing help to
call 815-968-9300.
In addition, several community colleges have offered their counseling services to NIU students. If a student wishes to contact their offices they need to indicate they are an NIU student.
